When you think of Seoul, you might picture royal palaces, busy shopping streets, colorful markets, or the Han River.
But there is another side of Seoul that is becoming increasingly popular with younger travelers: hiking.
And one of the best places to experience it is Achasan.
At only 295.7 meters high, Achasan is not a dramatic or intimidating mountain. In fact, that is part of its charm.
The hike is relatively easy, but the view is surprisingly spectacular.
You can walk through a peaceful green landscape, climb above the city, and soon find yourself looking out over the Han River and the enormous Seoul skyline.
You don't have to leave Seoul to find a mountain.
๐ฟ A Mountain Hidden in the City
Achasan is located in eastern Seoul, close to the Han River.
It is easily accessible from the city and offers several hiking routes, making it possible to plan anything from a short outing to a longer mountain hike.
Achasan is also connected to Yongmasan. If you want more of a workout, you can continue along the mountain ridge toward Yongmasan instead of turning back after Achasan.
This flexibility is one of the reasons I like it.

๐ The View Is Much Bigger Than the Mountain
This is what always surprises me about Achasan.
The mountain itself isn't particularly high, but once you reach the open viewpoints, the scenery feels enormous.
The Han River stretches across the landscape, bridges connect the city, and Seoul's apartment neighborhoods and skyline spread out below you.
On a clear day, the view can be remarkably crisp.
And that's what makes Achasan such a satisfying hike.
You don't have to work incredibly hard to get an incredible view.
For me, that is one of Achasan's greatest strengths.
I visit the mountain regularly, and on a clear day I can even see the area where I live from the trail.
There is something special about looking down at a city that is not simply a tourist destination, but your everyday home.
๐ฐ๐ท A Glimpse of Korean Hiking Culture
If you visit Achasan, you may notice something else.
People of all ages use the mountain.
Some are exercising. Some are walking with friends. Some are enjoying the scenery. Others seem to have simply come to breathe some fresh air after spending the day in the city.
This is an important part of everyday Korean life.
Hiking isn't always a serious weekend expedition.
Sometimes, it is simply something you do.
You take the subway, walk up a mountain, enjoy the view, and return home.
That is one reason I think Achasan is particularly interesting for visitors who want to experience how people actually live in Seoul, rather than only visiting famous tourist attractions.
๐ Easy to Reach, Easy to Adapt
Another advantage of Achasan is its flexibility.
You can approach the mountain from different directions using public transportation, and different starting points create different hiking options.
If you arrive without a car, you can choose a route that suits your time and energy.
If you drive, there are also access points on the eastern side of the mountain.

๐ What About Sunset and Night?
Achasan has another side that is becoming increasingly popular: sunset and night views.
Because the mountain overlooks Seoul and the Han River, the scenery changes dramatically as the daylight fades.
Some hikers visit around sunset, while others hike after dark to see Seoul's lights from above.
I haven't personally done the night hike yet, so I won't pretend otherwise.
But the fact that people regularly come here after sunset is another fascinating part of Achasan's growing appeal.
For a visitor, it offers something very different from the usual evening itinerary of restaurants, shopping, and nightlife.
You can watch Seoul light up from a mountain.
๐ Why Achasan Is Worth Your Time
If you're visiting Seoul and want to experience something beyond the usual tourist route, Achasan is worth considering.

It doesn't ask you to work too hard.
It simply rewards you generously.
A Little More Than a Hike
Seoul is often introduced through its palaces, markets, cafés, shopping districts, and nightlife.
But if you want to understand the city a little differently, try looking at it from above.
Achasan is one of those places where nature, exercise, local life, and the city itself come together.
And once you've stood on the mountain looking across Seoul, you may understand why more travelers are beginning to discover it.
Sometimes the best way to experience Seoul is to climb just a little higher. ๐ฟ
